Asthma Society of Canada boosts nuclear energy

“People with severe asthma may struggle to breathe even when they are taking their prescribed medication,” says Vanessa Foran, President and CEO of the Asthma Society of Canada. “Environmental allergens are the primary triggers for 60-80% of Canadians living with asthma."

Low-emissions energy sources like nuclear are essential for improving air quality. In Ontario, Canada, coal burning peaked in the year 2000, with almost 50 million tons of greenhouse gas and particulate emissions released into the environment. Fifteen years later, a decision to restart 6 nuclear reactors provided 90% of the electricity needed to phase out coal for good. Today, Ontario residents, including the millions that live in Toronto, enjoy cleaner air and better health.
